Mahabaleshwar Sail: Prominent Konkani writer Mahabaleshwar Sail was on 31 August 2017 presented with the Saraswati Samman 2016 for his novel 'Hawthan'. The novel 'Hawthan', published in 2009, captures cultural lives of traditional potter community in Goa.
Anita Karwal: IAS officer Anita Karwal was appointed as the new Chairperson of Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE on 31 August 2017. The 1988-batch officer from Gujarat cadre is currently serving as additional secretary in HRD Ministry. She was the Gujarat Chief Electoral officer during the Lok Sabha election in 2014.
IRNSS-1H: ISRO's attempt to launch its eighth regional navigation satellite IRNSS-1H turned out to be unsuccessful on 31 August 2017 after the satellite failed to come out of the heat shield as it should have.
Peggy Whitson: NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson is set to return to Earth from the International Space Station on 2 September 2017, after completing a 288-day mission.
Whitson would be returning with her Expedition 52 crewmates, Nasa’s Jack Fischer and Fyodor Yurchikhin of the Russian space agency Roscosmos. They are scheduled to land in Kazakhstan.
Nirmala Sitharaman: Nirmala Sitharaman, a JNU alumni and former Minister of State (Independent Charge) Commerce, was appointed as the new Defence Minister on 3 September 2017, thus gaining entry into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union Cabinet.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni: Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on 3 September 2017 became the first wicketkeeper in the world of cricket to claim 100 stumping in the One Day International (ODI). With this, Dhoni surpassed the former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara, who had 99 stumpings in 404 ODI matches.
North Korea: North Korea on 3 September 2017 announced that it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb that can be placed on an intercontinental ballistic missile. The announcement was made by the state news agency after geological agencies registered a man-made quake in the northeast of the country.
Amritpal Singh: Captain of Indian basketball team Amritpal Singh on 31 August 2017 created history by becoming the first Indian player to be signed by an Australian Basketball team. 
5 September: International Day of Charity
The International Day of Charity was observed across the globe on 5 September 2017 to commemorate the death anniversary of Mother Teresa who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her charity work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress.

Teacher’s Day was celebrated on 5 September 2017 to celebrate the birth anniversary of Former President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Nitin Gadkari: Union minister Nitin Gadkari, who assumed additional charge of water resources on4 September 2017, has announced the formation of an inter-ministerial task force for speedy implementation of the Centre’s Namami Gange mission.
Hurricane Harvey: A recent report has indicated that the Hurricane Harvey is likely to be the most expensive weather disaster in the history of the United States of America.
The report was released on 1 September 2017 Friday by AccuWeather, a US weather forecasting firm.
Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs): Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released its 2017 list of the Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs). The list identifies private sector lender HDFC Bank Ltd as a D-SIB. With this inclusion in the list, the HDFC has joined State Bank of India (SBI) and ICICI Bank Ltd, which has been tagged as D-SIBs or too-big-to-fail for the consecutive third year.
N R Narayana Murthy: Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy was on 3 September 2017 conferred with the PLuS Alliance Prize 2017 along with Mumbai-born scientist Veena Sahajwalla. Both the winners received USD 50000 as cash prize.
Mother Teresa: Saint Teresa, also known as Mother Teresa, was on 6 September 2017 declared the as the co-patron of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Calcutta, 131 years after St Francis Xavier was declared as first patron.
Vivek Goenka: Vivek Goenka was on 7 September 2017 unanimously elected as the Chairman of Press Trust of India (PTI). Goenka succeeds Riyad Mathew of the Malayala Manorama group.
International Literacy Day: The 51st International Literacy Day was celebrated across the world on 8 September 2017 with the theme ‘Literacy in a Digital World’.
Rafael Nadal: Rafael Nadal on 10 September 2017 won his third US Open and 16th Grand Slam title in New York.
Nadal defeated South Africa's Kevin Anderson 6-3 6-3 6-4 to grab the prestigious title.
The Spaniard has now won two Slams in the same year for the first time since 2013, having won the French Open in June 2017.
Tahir Mahmood: Eminent jurist Tahir Mahmood was on 9 September 2017 awarded with the prestigious N R Madhava Menon Best Law Teacher Award 2017 for his distinguished services to legal education and legal profession on the occasion of Law Teachers' Day celebrations.
Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL): The Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) is all set to become a Maharatna company. The company is currently a Navratna firm.
The decision to grant Maharatna status to BPCL was taken by a panel headed by the Cabinet secretary.
India and Belarus: India and Belarus on 12 September 2017 signed 10 Memorandums of Understanding to expand cooperation in a range of areas including oil and gas, youth affairs and sports, skill development and entrepreneurship, scientific and technical cooperation, agricultural research and education and culture.
India and Morocco: The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12 September 2017 approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Morocco on cooperation in the field of health.
India and Armenia: The Union Cabinet on 12 September 2017 approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Armenia on cooperation in the field of disaster management. The cabinet was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
14 September: National Hindi Diwas
National Hindi Divas (Hindi Day) was observed across India on 14 September 2017 to promote Hindi as Matra Bhasha (mother tongue) of India and to propagate Hindi language and its cultural heritage and values.
15 September: International Day of Democracy
The International Day of Democracy was observed across the world on 15 September 2017. The day was celebrated this year with the theme ‘Democracy and Conflict prevention’.

This year's theme focuses on the critical need to strengthen democratic institutions to promote peace and stability.
