Current Affairs Series - April 1 to April 10, 2017

This current affairs series is important for upcoming SSC CGL Exam 2017 and other competitive exams. I am going to provide you current affairs for last six months.

P V Sindhu: P V Sindhu on 2 April 2017 defeated reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain to lift her maiden India Open Super Series title.
Third seeded Sindhu defeated Marin 21-19, 21-16 at the Sirifort Sports Complex. The Indian badminton player had last defeated Marin in the BWF Super Series in Dubai in the year 2016.

Leander Paes: Leander Paes on 2 April 2017, combining with Canadian Adil Shamasdin, lifted the Leon Challenger Tour tennis tournament Men's Doubles trophy at Leon, Mexico.
Paes and Shamasdin defeated Switzerland’s Luca Margaroli and Caro Zampieri of Brazil 6-1 6-4 in the title clash at the USD 75000 hard court event.

Chenani-Nashri tunnel: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2 April 2017 inaugurated Chenani-Nashri tunnel, India’s longest highway tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir. This 9 km long twin-tube tunnel is an ideal example of the government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ initiative.

Miami Open Men's Singles title: Roger Federer on 2 April 2017 outclassed Spain’s Rafael Nadal to win the 2017 Miami Open Men's Singles title.
Eighteen-time Grand Slam champion defeated Nadal in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to win his third Miami Open title.

SBI Merger: Five associate banks of SBI and the Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) were on 1 April 2017 merged with the State Bank of India (SBI).

These five associate banks that were merged with the SBI are -
i. State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur
ii. State Bank of Hyderabad
iii. State Bank of Mysore
iv. State Bank of Patiala
v. State Bank of Travancore

World Press Freedom Prize: Dawit Isaak, an imprisoned Eritrean-Swedish journalist, on 30 March 2017 was chosen to receive the 2017 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
Isaak was chosen for the prestigious award in recognition of his courage, resistance and commitment to freedom of expression.

B P Kanungo: B P Kanungo on 3 April 2017 took over as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Kanungo was appointed to the position of the Deputy Governor for a period of three years by the Union Government on 11 March 2017. Prior to that, he was holding the position of Executive Director of RBI.

Kishori Amonkar: Kishori Amonkar, the renowned Hindustani classical vocalist, passed away in Mumbai on 3 April 2017. She was 84.
Amonkar, one of the foremost singers in the Hindustani tradition, was an innovator of the Jaipur Gharana. The Jaipur Gharana is a community of musicians sharing a distinctive musical style.

Barak surface-to-surface missiles: The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on 3 April 2017 approved the procurement of a fresh batch of Barak surface-to-surface missiles for naval warships. This procurement will help to enhance India’s maritime capability.

Virat Kohli: India’s ace batsman Virat Kohli on 5 April 2017 was named the Leading Cricketer in the World for 2016.
The announcement was made in the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, which is also often referred to as the ‘Bible of the Cricket.’

International Day of Sport for Development and Peace: International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) was observed across the world on 6 April 2017. The date commemorates the inauguration of the first Olympic games of the modern era, in Athens (Greece) in 1896.

National Maritime Day: India on 5 April 2017 observed the 54th edition of the National Maritime Day.

Bitcoin and digital currencies: Japan officially recognized bitcoin and digital currencies as legal money with effect from 1 April 2017.
The recognition comes after implementation of a new law amending Banking Act in Japan for legalizing these currencies. The step will facilitate integration of digital currency into legal banking system through regulatory scrutiny.

Raman Roy: The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) on 5 April 2017 announced the appointment of Raman Roy its Chairman for 2017-2018. He will take on the new role from 6 April 2017.

64th National Film Awards: The 64th National Film Awards were announced on 7 April 2017.

Anuja Ravindra Dhir: Indian-origin Anuja Ravindra Dhir on 9 April 2017 became the first non-white judge of the Old Bailey Court of London. She is also the youngest circuit judge currently to sit at the court.

Kulbhushan Jadhav: Kulbhushan Jadhav, a former Indian Navy officer, was sentenced to death by a military court of Pakistan on 10 April 2017. He was accused of espionage and sabotage activities in Pakistan, mainly Balochistan and Karachi.

Malala Yousafzai: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on 10 April 2017 designated Malala Yousafzai as a UN Messenger of Peace with a special focus on girls’ education.
Nobel Laureate Yousafzai is the youngest-ever UN Messenger of Peace. She is also the first one to be designated by Secretary-General Guterres since he assumed office in January 2017.
