P V Sindhu: Badminton player P V Sindhu on 18 August 2016 won historic silver medal in women’s singles badminton event at Rio Olympics.
Global Innovation Index (GII) 2016: The 9th edition Global Innovation Index (GII) 2016 was released on 15 August 2016 jointly by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The GII 2016 was based on the theme of Winning with Global Innovation.
India has ranked 66th in the 2016 Global Innovation Index. In this edition, India has jumped up by 15 spots from 81st position in 2015 GII.
Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin: Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin on 18 August 2016 became the first Iranian woman to win an Olympic medal. She claimed the bronze in the taekwondo event in the 57kg category.
Dr. Urjit R Patel: Union Government on 20 August 2016 appointed Dr. Urjit R Patel as the 24th governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He will be having tenure of three years with effect from 4 September 2016.
Kamal Haasan: The Minister of Culture and Communication, France, in the third week of August 2016 selected Kamal Haasan for the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres (Knight in the National Order Arts and Letters).

Sunita Jain: Hindi scholar and writer Sunita Jain was on 17 August 2016 awarded with the prestigious 25th Vyas Samman 2015 for her poetry collection Kshama. She received the award by West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi.
V P Singh: Badnore on 22 August 2016 took oath as the new Governor of Punjab. He was also sworn in as the Administrator of Chandigarh Administration.
India – West Indies: India on 22 August 2016 won the four-match test series against West Indies 2-0. Fifth day's play in the fourth test in Port of Spain was called off due to rain.
Kabaddi World Cup: The International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) on 22 August 2016 announced that the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup will be hosted in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Sellapan Ramanathan: Singapore’s former president Sellapan Ramanathan died on 22 August 2016. He was 92.
S R Nathan was of Indian-origin and the sixth and longest-serving President of Singapore. He was closely associated with the country’s founding leader Lee Kuan Yew.

Tillakaratne Dilshan: Veteran Sri Lanka batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan on 25 August 2016 announced his retirement from international cricket.
