Despite its top Indian ranking, Bangalore's worldwide rank is very low at 141st position in a list of 221 cities globally in terms of standard of living, compiled by the 'Quality of Living Survey - Worldwide Rankings, 2011' by the global HR (human resources) consultancy major Mercer.
Vienna has been ranked as the world's best city to live in on the global list, which has five Indian cities -- Bangalore (141st), New Delhi (143rd), Mumbai (144th), Chennai (150th) and Kolkata (151st).

Basava Sri Award: The Karnataka State government on 1 December 2011 announced its decision to confer the prestigious Basava Sri Award for the year 2010 on noted environment activist Medha Patkar. Social activist and Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar was chosen for the Basava award for the year 2010 for excellence in service in the social sector.

CEO of the Year award: SAIL chairman C.S. Verma was conferred CEO of the Year award under public sector category by Minister of State for Road Transport Tushar Chaudhary in New Delhi on 2 December 2011. CEO of the Year award has been instituted by the Indian Institute of Materials Management.

GDP Growth: As per the data released by the government on 30 November 2011, Gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the first half (April-September) of financial year 2011-12 moderated to 7.3 per cent from 8.6 per cent in the first six months of 2010-11.

Lana Peters: Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin’s only daughter, Lana Peters, who had defected to the US while in India at the height of the Cold War died on 22 November 2011 in Wisconsin. At her birth, on 28 February 1926 she was named Svetlana Stalina, the only daughter and last surviving child of the brutal Soviet tyrant Josef Stalin. In 1970, after her defection and an American marriage, she became and remained Lana Peters.
